Guitarist

Now that I am basically done writing music for the album I started switching gears today to work on my guitar playing.

It is a strange thing to kinda re-find this whole other side of me as a musician. Not to say that it hasn't been there all along. It has and it has certainly influenced the songs.

While I wrote riffs and instrumental sections for various songs 9 time out of 10 I really had to work on them to master my own parts. To me that is clearly the guitar player side of me influencing and pushing the song write side. But for a while there particular the last couple months I found myself so heavily immersed in song writing that I would call myself a "song writer" over a guitarist. Today my guitar player side most decidedly rebelled against this title.

Starting around 4 p.m. this afternoon I was attacked by an overwhelmingly need to hone my guitar craft even more. I spent most of today working off and on (as my hands could take it) on sweep picking which, is certainly the technique I am lacking on the most.

I have to say it gave me a real rush to hear these sweep arpeggios coming flying out of my guitar! I certainly got similar rushes while mastering riffs or finishing up a song while writing on the album but this was different. This was just pure guitar geek joy. This was me tapping into the joy of finding there are always new horizons to conquer musically and technically. Always more room to progress and be progressive. And that really is what it is all about, at least for me. That is why I play guitar and write music. To progress. To move forward. To challenge myself and others musically, mentally, spiritually and physically and then to meet, to communicate and to and strive to be better.

Tell next time

Hate Waiting

Remember Christmas? As a kid I would get excited a week before and that excitement would just build. Christmas Eve I wouldn't be able to sleep tell 3 or 4 in the morning. That is how I feel about the singer search which continues to go well but not quick enough for me. A few candidates seem surprisingly good. I have a personal favorite. Hopefully more on that soon.

I need to track down an acoustic guitar to write one last song on but other then that I am just about done with everything I can realistically do with the album! The next step will be to get the band together and record live demos of all the songs so we can make sure everything works. Once I have those I will build transitions between the songs where needed and that will wrap the music for the album.

If Christmas comes soon we could be recording the album in a couple of months!

The site is done

Well, after much hard work the site is complete including this blog! You can check back here from time to time to hear what the band members are up to. If you dig the site or any of the other design or video elements you can check out some more of my design work at mercenary mediums.com.

That is it for now. More later.
